Let’s see it verbal 😀
8 out of 10 for me 🙁
Way to call me out D. Unfortunately, I got a 9.
Laid is the past form of the transitive verb lay, but lay is the past form of the intransitive verb lie (even though no one uses it that way). Besides, when’s the last time you heard someone use the perfect form of lie- lain? The right way sounds stupid, and I’m thinking this may be one of those cases in which modern usage will end up overriding grammatical correctness as English evolves.
“The rules of grammar as linguists understand them have already changed.
That is, for very many native speakers of English, the two forms are in
free variation, or vary according to context, or *lay* has replaced *lie*.
But that fact is different from what is considered acceptable standard
usage in formal writing situations.”
Have I justified my mistake yet?
90% on a verbal test, that just ruined my day.
same as Scott.
Honor code – don’t read comments before the test…
i did, hence i didn’t let myself get right the one you got wrong yet explained.
I see. A man of honor :o)
6 of 10. Grammar is not never been a strength. At least i don’t teaches english.
It’s funny – In 5th grade I actually lost the county-wide spelling bee on the word ‘grammatically’. Isn’t that ironical :o)
got a 9, my cup runneth over. sorry, no sharing with the big bitsas………..
9 outa 10
10 out of 10 – Would have been 9 out of 10 had it not been for a discussion that I had with Scott before I took the test . . .So, thanks, dude! 🙂
You’ve got you a woman of honor right there, Scott.
Well, since the people posting are some of the smartest people know, I think we can grade this one on a curve. I feel a little better now. And yes, Josh, I do.
Now that’s what I like to see, a mann standing by his lady.
mann, that was lame……
btw, i am in boone, 14”+ of snow, went skiing at sugar last night, and they have gotten 25” since friday afternoon. love the high country..
I’m in Batavia, NY. The drive up here was awful. We hit snow like an hour outside of Winston and didn’t see the end of it until we got here, like 600 miles later.
Okay, so why did you choose the Grammar Quiz to post this instead of a different blog?
ummm…because I wasn’t thinking…probably so frazzled by the drive…it was supposed to be a journal entry.
Also because this is one of the most highly posted-to threads ever on MC – he knew everyone would see it.
Isn’t 45 the record with the engagement?
A quick press of the “most comments” button reveals the correctness of my inquisition. What functionality.
