Sonnet Encore ST G4 1.2 GHz Processor Upgrade
Overall Rating: 5
Experience Date:Aug 01, 2004

Good:
Highly cost effective upgrade for old G4 machines
Bad:
Scary upgrade process for novices

Trone had several Powermac G4 450’s that we were interested in upgrading. I ordered Sonnet G4 1.2 GHz and 1.4 GHz upgrade cards. I also ordered an ATI Radeon 9000 video card. I took some benchmarks I’d already had from XBench (http://www.xbench.com) and then upgraded the G4 one piece at a time (first just to the 1.2 processor, then added the ATI card, then removed ATI card and installed the 1.4 processor). My budget restricted me from even trying the 1.4 processor and the ATI card, not to mention the test results with the 1.2 don’t seem to justify spending much money at all on another video card. I had some time/curiosity at the end of my testing, so I took a G4 867MHz, benchmarked it, and tried some upgrades on it as well.

I don’t claim that the tests are 100% reliable, but the numbers combined with my experience of sitting in front of the machine convinced me the machines are definitely much faster.

We concluded that it was well worth the ~$340/machine to upgrade our G4 450’s. It really is like working on a new machine.
