Today I woke up and listened to the weatherman say it was 10 degrees outside with a wind chill of -9. Fahrenheit! I confirmed (to my dismay) that I had not somehow managed to pick up a Fairbanks radio station and took the dog out. Ideas for speeding up a dog’s answer to nature’s call are welcomed.

Let her run – she’ll be back before long if it’s that cold. Also try dipping her paw in warm water.

We did a similar thing with Jack by associating a command with that action. In addition we only allowed her to go in one area of the yard that has a lot of under brush. She has associated bathroom with underbrush so even at a friends house she wont use the bathroom in an open yard, she runs into the brush. Its great, no picking up pooh.

Teach your dog to go to the bathroom on command. Its as easy as just using the same command everytime she goes to the bathroom on her own.We just tell Mercy to “Go Potty”. She runs outside, does her business and runs back in. No muss, no fuss… 🙂

Yeah…I’ve tried to work with her the same way we’ve trained her to do other things, but she’s pretty much oblivious to any rewards when she’s outside (therefore making it hard to reinforce correct behavior). It’s quite annoying. She’s not very food-driven to start with. Also, if we just let Lucy run out the door, she goes into the woods and comes out when she’s ready (not when we are). That’s getting better, but still frustrating (especially yesterday when she got out and ran down the street in Batavia in the single digit temps).
