Review of East of Eden

Title: East of Eden
Author: John Steinbeck
Date Completed: 01/22/2005

Rereadability Rating: 4
Lifechangeability Rating: 3
Entertainment Rating: 4.5

I read this in the beginning of 2005 as my first book in the “Read a Classic a month” project with Kyle. It is an excellent book. Steinbeck is a master, of course, and I can’t really do the book justice with a review. It is extremely insightful into human nature and carries the recurring theme of man being given the ability of being able to change his “fate”. At about 600 pages (give or take, depending on the version), it’s kind of long, but there were only a couple of times that I felt like the reading got slow. I know that I didn’t pick up on a ton of stuff (symbolism and all that) in the book, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It is masterful writing, and I’m hoping I can read something as good next month.
